Montana’s Ancient Past

Project Scope

Montana’s Ancient Past brings part of the Paleontology Collection at the University of Montana to the Montana Natural History Center to interpret the geologic history of the state. The full exhibit provides a glimpse into how the landscape where Montana is today has changed over four eras in Earth’s history and how that influenced the diversity of life. The five major extinction events are emphasized. The exhibit closes with questions about the Anthropocene and its current impact on Earth’s biodiversity.

Project Objectives

  • Create an exhibit showcasing Montana’s rich fossil record in partnership with the University of Montana Paleontology Collection
  • Facilitate discussion on Earth’s major extinction events and how current human impact could affect the biodiversity of life
  • Facilitate discussion on evolution based on how life adapted and changed over time with environmental pressure
